The Art Of Chikankari
Chikan means ‘embroidery’. Chikankari is a traditional style of embroidery that originated during the Mughal period in the city of Lucknow. The design is very simple and artistic. It gives a subtle and delicate look to the cloth and shows precise handwork. This design is brought to life on a fabric at two stages. First, a wooden block is engraved with the design and dipped in the dyes which is used to print a stencil on the fabric. Then comes the needlework which the fabric is stitched block by block, tracing the ink patterns. When the work is complete, the fabric is washed off to remove the ink. Making these stitches is a very delicate art and requires skilled hands.
Chikankari was initially done on white muslin cloth with white threads. But today we can find it in all color variations. But the classic still remains the white-on-white combination itself. Floral patterns are the most common designs we can in Cchikankari. Other than that, we can also see beads, mirrors, sequins etc which add to the look. The muslin cloth has now been replaced with other lightweight fabrics like cotton, chiffon, net, silk etc.
Not only in India, but Chikankari has also become famous worldwide for its richness and delicacy. Many international stars have been spotted wearing Chikankari at international events. Many brands have Chikankari clothes in their arsenal like Biba, FabIndia, Soch, Jashn etc. At Limeroad we bring you all the brands under one roof so you can get your own item of Chikankari kurta that is genuine and stylish.
